Psychology- HL/SL In the month of November, we covered a very interesting topic which is one of the options for Paper 2, the Psychology of Human Relationships. We applied the three approaches; biological, cognitive and sociocultural to explain formation of personal relationships. Our teacher conducted an activity in class which motivated us to study this topic further. In this activity, we discussed our interpersonal relationships and the type of traits or values we look for in our ideal partner and then compared it with the traits or values that we think we hold within ourselves. This was based on the Similarity-Attraction Model and the task was called, “How do you know when you’re in love?”. This activity helped us apply the theories that we discussed to real-life. This is how we, as students, could personally relate to the topic and understand it in depth. We discussed the Halo Effect and its role in attraction. We also learnt the role of communication in personal relationships. We discussed theories like Fatal Attraction Theory, Social Penetration Theory, etc. that help understand why relationships change or end. We had in depth discussions on: How does the Internet affect the way that we communicate with each other? And how does this affect relationships? Why is online dating so unsatisfactory for so many people? How does this link to the theories that we learnt?
Student Name: Bhavya Anand
History- HL/SL We started this month with a command term task, wherein we collaborated to understand different command terms and practices to write our answers and understand the variations that should come in the answers with the change in command term. ITGS- HL/SLWe started the month with  Computer Models and Simulations which was the topic. For this task we researched computer models and their applications which allowed me to form a basic understanding of the unit. We discussed the two main events that computer models are used for which are “events that are difficult or impossible to observe, eg. effects of an earthquake” and “events which are expensive or dangerous to test, eg. effects of a car crash on passengers”. In order to understand the major components of a computer model we studied a case study on how to create a basic climate model. Through this activity we were able to understand that the program of a computer model requires variables and processes to make predictions on the basis of which we make decisions. We also discussed another relevant application of computer models which is a car crash model; while studying this model, we understood how car crash model works. One of the most significant advantages of this is that the same scenario can be repeated with the same variables and conditions which allows for accurate decision making. This showed us that models can be used for ‘What if analysis’; they are cheaper and sometimes the only option. After computer models, we started computer simulations by researching that computer models are the base of computer simulations. The focus of the unit was the real life applications of Model and Simulations. We concluded the month with revision on spreadsheet which allowed us to review advanced functions of Excel like Lookup. We had two formative assessments, one using a Bingo activity, and another based on Case study.

Global Politics-HL/SL We started with the new unit – Development, which focused on political analysis of development indicators to be universal or westernized focusing on principles of capitalism. We learnt about theories given after 1945 as the world system changed with the end of colonization and the era of the UN began. Modernization theory states that there are five stages that each economy has to go through but dependency theory tries to counter it with the elements of communism in it. So far, we have been looking at varied, sometimes opposite theories that tell us the relation between economics and politics. Some indicators given by the IMF and world bank look problematic and not suitable for all. Hence, the need for all inclusive indicators is the demand of the hour.

Application and Interpretation- HL In Mathematics Applications and Interpretations HL, we completed units Applications of differentiation and were introduced to techniques for integration and definite integrals. We explored optimizations’ using our knowledge of differentiation and applied it in real life context using word problems. For example, finding the maximum surface area of a ball. We further explored finding first and second derivatives for optimization using technology. During a class assessment carried out in pairs, we explored either maximizing surface area or minimizing volume of an object/container of our choice and used our artistic skills to creatively demonstrate our process as a poster. For example, I personally maximized the surface area of my jewelry box and demonstrated my calculations on a poster. Furthermore, we were taught about how 2 correlated variables change with respect to time using related rates. For example, as the length of the side of a square increases with respect to time, the area of the square increases as well.  We were further introduced to integration by approximating areas under the curves using the trapezoidal rule and Riemann’s integral. The trapezoidal rule involved dividing the area under the curve into trapezoids of specific intervals and finding their area to approximate the total area. The larger the number of intervals, the greater the accuracy of approximation. We further approximated these areas by graphing the curve on GDCs using the integration and graphing functions. Riemann’s integral follows a similar, more accurate approach to approximating area. We were also taught how to calculate the function from its derivative using anti differentiation. Lastly, we were introduced to definite integrals where we found the integral of the derivative, similar to anti differentiation using properties of differentiation itself. In order to test and strengthen our understanding, we were given task sheets on a weekly basis and various other resources as well.

Application and Interpretation- SL September was quite the month for Math AISL. It began with our mid-term assessments, which covered everything we have learnt till now. Our mid terms ended with the submission of our IAs so that we may receive feedback before giving our final submissions later this year. After this was over, we began with a new unit-  Geometry & Trigonometry under which we learned a new topic: Networks and Voronoi Diagrams. Within this unit, we revised the concepts of Networks that we had already learned prior in MYP 5, and we revised the midpoint, distance and slope formulas. To get a better understanding of Voronoi diagrams, we were introduced to an activity “Rush to the hospital” that was not only interesting but actually made us realize the need of learning the same topic. We not only did the activity but gave our individual reflections of how much we connected with the topic. We even dug into real life world situations which emphasized on the DP elements such as Theory of knowledge, International Mindedness and interdisciplinary threads. It was quite fascinating to know that the applications of Voronoi diagrams is not just limited to maps and networks but it is present everywhere. It can be seen the ceramics of Guan and Gee, in the fur of a Giraffe, abstract art patterns. It helps us to make decisions like choosing the shortest path to a site which might have helped in the war zones. We then began learning how to find perpendicular bisectors of particular lines, and how such a concept would be applied in Voronoi Diagrams. We discussed the functionality of Voronoi Diagrams, and how they’re present in other disciplines such as Computer Science and History. In order to test and strengthen our understanding, we were given task sheets on a weekly basis and various other resources as well.

Analysis and Approaches- HL In the past few weeks, we have completed the topic of differentiation and slowly stepped into the topic of integration. Before we moved on to integration, we looked into the application of differentiation. To better understand optimization, we completed a group task with different case studies on application of optimization that tested our conceptual knowledge as well as our collaborative skills. Throughout the weeks, we discussed the weekend task sheets to address any gaps in our understanding. For every topic, we practised by doing multiple questions of varying difficulty to properly understand the concept. We derived rules for finding the integrals by observing the pattern. We learnt to find the antiderivative for the given derivative. We learnt how to integrate by partial functions, substitution, and how to find particular values.

In the past month, the CAS retreat was introduced to us which will take place in the beginning of October. As an initiative, during the retreat, we plan to design a library and to make the NGO school’s environment more inviting to the students. Each CAS group created a VTR (Visual Thinking Routine) chart based on the subjects of Science, Math and English for the students of 3rd to 12th grade. Alongside this, our school organized an opportunity for the DP students to boost their creativity and activity experiences through the CAS bootcamp. The students chose between yoga, dance and theater for this bootcamp which took place every Monday for 40 mins to 1 hour. This experience was a stress buster for many and enjoyable especially after the pandemic, where we finally got a platform to express ourselves. In the other CAS sessions, we worked on the planning of our CAS self-led projects with our respective mentor’s guidance.

Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature

English A: Language and Literature- HL-  We began our session with a quick recap of the two literary texts (Persepolis and The Crucible) that had already been completed in the previous term. Holiday task was meant to prepare us for our engagement with these texts for paper 2 questions. Our work in this exam component began in earnest. We performed an interesting unscrambling activity where we were given, in groups, an essay that was in sections that were unrelated. We were to unscramble this and arrange the sections of texts to create one coherent essay. This activity tested our analytical thinking skills as we had to carefully map the ideas in each section and form links with others. This displayed our understanding of the comparative nature of the essay and if we could identify PEEL. After this, we received a list of possible questions for which we created mind maps and thematic links between the 2 prescribed texts with respect to the question asked. We have had class practice for writing effective thesis statements for this comparative essay. Simultaneously we have been exploring the next literary text, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. We are identifying themes through an exploration of the characters’ trajectory and significant episodes. We also worked on looking at the text from the lenses of different literary theories – Feminist and Marxist theories have been discussed with reference to the text and we are preparing for bringing in an interdisciplinary link with Psychology for psychoanalytical theory. We are also preparing for our last but final IOP. Text pairing and outlines have been shared  based on the DOs and DON’Ts checklist shared with us.

Economics- HL/SL In the month of August, the Economics students at SL and HL levels explored economies from a macroeconomic point of view. The macroeconomics approach started by discussing macroeconomic objectives: low inflation, low unemployment, and high and sustainable economic growth. These discussions and debates were based on global economic case studies like the US Financial Crisis, the Indian economy, and other countries. There was also an emphasis on graphs and structuring essay-style answers. One of the tasks was to frame an introduction of 10 marker questions on inflation. We then wrote the entire 10 and 15 markers as a Paper 1 structure. HL and SL students also had a formative on unemployment, specifically demand-deficient unemployment. Lastly, students were divided into groups for a group presentation on the aforementioned macroeconomic objectives. This presentation worked as a revision for all of the upcoming MTA exams. The presentation task was graded based on content, real-life examples, and terminology. This helped us comprehensively understand each objective and improve our communicative and critical thinking skills. Student’s Name: Aayush Bhandari
Psychology- HL/SL We started learning the last one of the core approaches for Paper one which was the sociocultural approach to understanding behavior. The unit began with topics related to the individual and the group including conformity based on Asch’s study. This was one of the classical experiments in Psychology and its methodology is used in other studies as well. We discussed Social Identity Theory which focuses on how ingroups and outgroups are created, as well as how we view people based on their membership to these groups. A formative assessment was conducted to test our knowledge on the same in the form of a short answer question for 9 marks. The next subtopic explored was the Social Cognitive Theory, based on a study conducted by Bandura. Our second formative assessment was conducted, in which we chose a clip of a movie or television series and explained the social cognitive theory through an infographic/ poster (example shown below). By the end of August, we completed stereotype formation, effects of stereotypes and cultural dimensions, focusing on individualistic and collectivistic cultures. We had numerous class activities on comparing cultures across the world which helped us appreciate and understand multiple perspectives and cultural traditions. Infographic on Social Cognitive Theory:

ITGS- HL/SL We started this month with an activity in which we analyzed the case study of a millirobot used for medical purposes. These robots directly entered the human body and hence there were important ethical implications like reliability, policies, standards and protocols, etc. During this activity we applied critical thinking skills since we had to analyze the ethical implications of this robot thoroughly. After the activity, we started a new theme of strand  two-government and politics. We learned about the various ways the government employs technology for both political incentives as well as citizen welfare. One of the most important subtopics of this theme was internet filtering. We discussed the various methods of filtering used by the government in order to expose citizens to limited information/ information that supported the government. To improve our knowledge about this subtopic, we were assigned a task to identify the most common methods of filtering used by governments around the world. Some of the methods were blacklisting websites, CRS systems and DNS poisoning . The next topic we covered was e-passports. While studying this subtopic, we were introduced to the various security features e- passports have, like, authentication using RFID reader, verifying the digital signature unique to each passport, etc. We read case studies about how the government uses technology for political campaigns, one example of which wasMr. Arvind Kejriwal’s recent campaign “EK Mauka AAP Ko ” launched on social media to attract voters in poll bound states of Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Mr. Arvind Kejriwal urged people of Delhi to make videos capturing the development under his government with an appeal to the poll-bound states. Our next topic was online government which includes online crime statistics websites for citizens (which could be a major privacy concern since some websites also reveal the images of the criminal), sites that offer advice on taxes, open government websites, etc. We also learned about different forms of voting like e – voting and traditional voting. After this we were given a formative assessment as practice for the MTSA which covered the theme of government and politics. We also learned about the use of smart weapons in the military and how it provides an edge in warfare. Other than smart weapons, technology is used in mixed reality simulations to train soldiers without the risk of getting injured. After this we focused on the IA. We received detailed feedback from our teacher and incorporated that into our work. Student’s Name: Vansh Kapoor
History – HL/SL In the last month, we have started with our Paper 2 case study on the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick I Barbarossa (1155–1190), a German king famous for his heroics in the Second Crusade. We have discussed various issues around which historians have been debating related to his achievements and failures as a Holy Roman Emperor. Apart from that, we also practiced an essay on Barabarossa’s administrative, economic and religious policies. We did one interesting source analysis and wrote down our summary of the same in which there was the evaluation of a famous quote by Voltaire- “The Holy Roman Empire was in no way holy, nor Roman, nor an empire,” The discussion was along the following lines of argument–
·Was it Holy ?
·Was it Roman?
·Was it an Empire ?

During the month of August, we, as intrigued  students of environmental sciences, explored the subject because not only did we actively learn through class interactions but we expanded our learning beyond the classroom as well. We collectively took soil samples from around the school grounds to test if acid rain changes the natural 7 PH level of the soil. In this way, all students interacted and gained new and exciting knowledge about lab work and reports. We also applied this knowledge in the real-world and used new lab equipment which was highly enriching. The soil systems unit was packed with dynamic and relevant knowledge about the environment around us which made us a holistic and environmentally aware community of students. Student’s Name: Mayhar Malhotra
Physics- HL/SL In July, we began the semester by reflecting on our performance in DP1 along with the ways we may achieve our goals for DP2. We simultaneously focused on developing our internal assessment reports and sought feedback for them. Additionally, the waves HL topics were covered, where we delved into the behavior of light in double and single slit while also tackling questions involving the Doppler’s effect. Finally, we are learning about electric fields, the heating effect of current and Kirchhoff’s circuit laws. We look forward to more physics! Student’s Name: Alisha Das Anat
Chemistry – The term began with a reflection activity and goal setting. We reflected on our performance and identified our weak areas which we need to work upon for achieving our goals. Further in Chemistry, we delved deeper into the core topics of the subject, including Energetics and Redox Reactions. We were able to tackle the vast unit of Energetics through extensive in-class discussions and practice task sheets. In Energetics, we learned about topics such as Enthalpy of a Reaction, Entropy, Gibbs free energy, Energy cycle, Haber’s cycle, etc. We performed an investigation on the “Metal Calorimeter”, for determining  the enthalpy of solution of zinc and copper sulphate. The classes were highly enriching as we prepared thoroughly for our upcoming MTA; we also did an FA on this unit to gauge our understanding of the unit and analyze our performance. Then we moved on to Redox Reactions, wherein we read about ubiquitous oxidation and reduction reactions that happen simultaneously in reactions. This was an intriguing topic as we first started with the fundamentals of writing half equations and then moved on to complex techniques such as the Winkler Method and Iodine- thiosulphate reactions (Redox Titrations). We also studied about Voltaic Cells/ Galvanic Cells and saw a live demonstration of it in class. Simultaneously, we worked on our Chemistry IAs and discussed our investigations with our facilitator. Student’s Name: Aishani Sharma
Biology SL /HL- We concluded the Ecology unit by discussing various case studies and setting up the mesocosm. We have started with the last unit of the SL syllabus Human Physiology and are conducting trials for our  internal assessment for the MTA draft submission. Both were done simultaneously so that we could finish our syllabus on  time and incorporate feedback for primary data collection. We reviewed our formative assessment results through markschemes. We explored cardiac cycle and ECG through a simulation and used a blood pressure machine to understand the diastole and systole pressure. We also solved IB-style questions as revision sheets from Inthinking.  The guest speaker session by the University college of Dublin helped us to strengthen our conceptual understanding and application of genetics. We explored nanoparticles for drug delivery which will help many of us in writing our extended essay and internal assessment drafts.

We look forward to more of such opportunities that can provide us the platform to showcase our passions, as a part of the CAS journey. Student’s Name: Krutica Aggarwal
Theory Of Knowledge
In the past few classes of TOK, we had interactive brainstorming sessions on the area of knowledge of mathematics. We all were divided into groups wherein we created posters after reading an article on how mathematical models have been able to predict the exact number of killings of serial killers. We all took a different approach to formulate a claim and a counterclaim with perspectives about the extent to which mathematical models are reliable and reflect accurate predictions. While presenting our posters, we discussed scenarios in which mathematical models have been manipulated in political and judicial sectors where processes like gerrymandering become prevalent. On the other hand, we also discussed how mathematical models have provided organized predictions of the deaths that occured due to the various strains of COVID-19, paving way for possibilities to prevent further spread of the virus. In the last week, we shifted our focus from mathematics to history. We began by discussing our Indian history and the significance of objects that we associate with our country’s history. In the next few classes, we aim to indulge in discussions that pertain to possibilities of history being viewed as completely factual or slightly abstract like art. Student’s Name: Hetvi Kirat Majmudar
